Dieting Britons should head for the land of the kebab, it has been revealed.
A typical Greek meal contains the least calories out of those at our favourite holiday destinations, according to new research.
The study found that fresh salads, grilled lamb kebabs and stuffed vine leaves had taken Greece to the top of the healthy-eating table. A typical Greek meal without alcohol contains about 1,130 calories.
Italy, with its fattening pizza and creamy pasta dishes, adds about 1,430 calories to a holidaymaker’s intake.
The survey claims that one in four Britons will choose a holiday destination this year based on the healthiness of the local cuisine.
People aged over 45 are leading the calorie-counting trend, with six in 10 saying that healthy food is a necessity when on a foreign break.
But according to the research, 67% of Britons put on weight on holiday, with 5% coming home a chunky 14lb heavier.
Joy Parker, home economist for the Somerfield magazine, whcih carried out the research, said: “It’s good to see so many British holidaymakers taking their health seriously and eating well on holiday.
“However, its important to remember that summer holidays are for kicking back, relaxing and enjoying yourself and so long as you don’t over do it and eat a well-balanced diet, a few holiday treats won’t hurt.”
