Slimy goo from the skin of an exotic green and pink frog could provide a radical new treatment for diabetes.
Scientists say the South American paradoxical frog – so-called because it shrinks in size with age – secretes a substance from its skin which protects it from infection.
But researchers believe the molecule could stimulate the release of insulin – the vital hormone lacking in diabetes sufferers.
Rates of obesity and diabetes are rising across England, although people are living longer than ever, government data has revealed.
Obesity rates in England were by 2005 the highest among the 15 member states who then formed the European Union.
But in the same period life expectancy continued to climb. A little girl could expect to live to 81, more than a year and a half longer than a decade before.
Scientists say it may be possible to use a breath test to monitor blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
US researchers have discovered people with type 1 diabetes exhale higher levels of methyl nitrates when their blood sugar levels are too high.
The team from the University of Irvine in California hope their work could replace the need for regular blood tests.

Israeli researchers studying the effect of pomegranate juice on heart disease parameters in patients with diabetes. Even “normal” illnesses like colds and flu can cause special problems for a child with diabetes.
Bones may play a more active role than previously thought in regulating the body’s chemistry, scientists say.

Tiny capsules made from seaweed and iron may help diabetics whose bodies reject insulin-cell transplants.
Researchers trying to understand why those transplants work for some people with Type I diabetes, but not for others, found success in experiments with mice and pigs.
