Two Peruvian alpacas have been recruited as security for a UK egg farm.
The animals, who have been named William and Harry, keep predators away from speciality egg producer Clarence Court’s hens near Camborne in Cornwall.
The Huacaya alpaca are said to be fiercely defensive of their feathered brood.
“We know that happy hens lay the tastiest eggs, and for that reason we recruited the alpacas.
“They are great company for the birds and will not only ensure they feel safe and sound, but fully entertained too.”
Alpacas, which are smaller than llamas, are kept in herds in South America and are highly valued for their wool.
They resemble a sheep in appearance, but are larger and have long erect necks, as well as coming in many colours, whereas sheep are generally bred to be white and black.
Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes in Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia and northern Chile.
