Meat Not a Menu Mainstay

Yet, your ham and cheese on brown may not be as healthy as you think. Since the World Cancer Research Fund recommended last fall that people lay off processed meat, I’ve had clients wonder whether they should trade in their pastrami for tuna.

Animal Viruses Threaten Human Plagues

apes.jpgScores of deadly infectious diseases are crossing the species barrier from animals to humans, scientists have reported.

A three-year investigation has shown that since 1940 around 250 viruses such as HIV, Ebola Virus, Sars and H5N1 bird flu have jumped from wild animals to people.

Presenting the first-ever map of “hotspots” of new infectious diseases in the British journal Nature, researchers predicted the next pandemic is most likely to come out of poor tropical countries.

snack.jpgCanadians like to snack. According to a recent Ipsos Reid survey, 84 per cent of us are regular snackers.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Noshing between meals boosts lagging energy levels, quells hunger and food cravings, and provides nutrients missing from meals. A small snack of fruit, nuts, yogurt or an energy bar will help tide you over until the next meal.

If you forget to tuck an apple or granola bar in your bag, there’s always a coffee shop, pizza place or juice bar to get something to go.

Catastrophic Epidemic Of Smoking In India

smokingindia.jpgIndia is in the midst of a catastrophic epidemic of smoking-related deaths that will soon claim more than one million lives annually, according to groundbreaking new research.

“India is competing with China in this macabre Olympics of who has the most tobacco deaths in the world,” according to Prabhat Jha of the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, the lead researcher.

kimchi.jpgSouth Korea’s national dish, kimchi, has been cleared for launch on the country’s first space expedition.

A specially-developed recipe of the much-loved pickled cabbage dish is among several Korean food products approved for the April 2008 mission.

The recipe omits a bacterium previously thought to be vital for fermentation but which would be dangerous in space.

A special container has also been to designed to withstand pressure and prevent any spicy spillages in space.
