Hilton fortune to go to charity

parishilton.jpgThe inheritance of US heiress Paris Hilton looks set to shrink dramatically after her grandfather announced plans to give most of his fortune to charity.

Hotel magnate Barron Hilton, 80, will donate 97% of his $2.3bn (£1.2bn; 1.6bn euros) fortune to the Conrad N Hilton Foundation, set up by his father.

giantrat.jpgScientists believe they have discovered a giant rat previously unknown to science in a jungle in Indonesia.

They also came across a pygmy possum which they think could be another new species.

Conservation International (CI) and Indonesian scientists made the finds in the jungles of a remote mountain region in the country’s Papua province.

manchestercathedral.jpgFortune magazine has chosen Sony’s use of Manchester Cathedral as the backdrop to a violent game as one of its “101 Dumb Moments in Business” for 2007.

The gaffe was picked at number 63 by the US publication in its list of “the dumbest of the dumb” occurrences.

Sony apologised to the Church of England for using the cathedral as a backdrop to “Resistance: Fall of Man”.

Whale ‘Missing Link’ Discovered

Remains found in the Kashmir region of India suggest the fox-sized mammal is the long-sought land-based ancestor of whales, dolphins and porpoises.

dog3.jpgThe 15th annual World Pie Eating Championship was thrown into chaos when a pet pooch ate all the pies.

Former champion Dave Williams had been entrusted with the pies, specially made for the contest in Wigan.

But as he was taking delivery of them, he was distracted by a pigeon stuck up the chimney and left the fridge door ajar.

When he returned, he found his dog Charlie had pounced – and scoffed the lot.

Shark Attacks At Bondi Beach

beach.jpgA swimmer has been attacked by a shark at Australia’s Bondi Beach, a favourite with tourists from around the world.

The shark reportedly grabbed the man by the arm but he escaped after punching it on the nose.

The man reached the Sydney shore before collapsing in a cave in which he was said to be living temporarily. He was later found by his girlfriend.

oldestman.jpgHryhoriy Nestor, a bachelor who was thought in his lifetime to be the oldest person in the world, has died at the age of 116 in Ukraine.

Mr Nestor died in his sleep on Friday night in the village of Stary Yarychev, in the western region of Lviv, the Kiev newspaper Segodnya reports.

He died before proof of his age was submitted to Guinness World Records.

tales.jpgJK Rowling has premiered a collection of fairy tales which she first mentioned in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows at a reading in London.

The world famous author has hand-written and illustrated just seven copies of the Tales Of Beedle The Bard.

One will be sold to raise money for her Children’s Voice charity at an auction at Sotheby’s in London later this week.

A typical Greek meal contains the least calories out of those at our favourite holiday destinations, according to new research.

The study found that fresh salads, grilled lamb kebabs and stuffed vine leaves had taken Greece to the top of the healthy-eating table. A typical Greek meal without alcohol contains about 1,130 calories.

Nutty Question: To Eat Or Not To Eat

nuts.jpgMothers who do not eat peanuts during pregnancy could leave their child susceptible to allergies, a report has warned.

It suggests that Britain’s allergy epidemic is being fuelled by Government advice to mothers not to eat peanuts during pregnancy and to avoid giving them to children at an early age.

The dramatic findings follow a series of studies which found that allergy rates are low, or non-existent, in countries where babies are weaned on peanuts.
